May 8 - 12 Happenings!

Happy Mother's Day!

On Wednesday we had a visit from the NA Fire Department and their Fire Safety House.  The kiddos learned more about fire safety and then practiced evacuating a "house" when the smoke alarm goes off.

We also spread some Kittredge Kindness this week!  On Friday we made cards for the students in our district who will be participating in the Special Olympics on May 23.  The kiddos worked with a partner and did a fantastic job decorating the cards!

Reading
Our story for the week was Homes Around the World by Judy Nayer.  This story taught us that homes are made out of different materials depending on what is around you and in which climate you live.  We saw homes made of mud, wood, stone, and bricks.  We also saw homes that were built above ground and some that were built below ground.

Fundations
We introduced one new Trick Word this week: from.  We also explored how to write a sentence word for word, checking that we'd written every sound in the word before putting our space.  We will only learn two more Trick Words this year!

Centers

Work With Miss Farr
Our stories this week were about homes, for people and for animals!

The boys and girls read a poem entitled "Mom is The Best!"  They drew a picture of themselves and their moms and then searched for TWENTY trick words!

The kiddos rolled a die (12 times) and wrote a specific Trick Word (from, of, they, have, the, for) depending on the number on which the die landed.

The students wrote, traced, colored, highlighted, and stamped from.

Book Circle
We followed along to a story and searched for/circled the word from.

The students completed a sentence and drew a picture to answer the question: "What is something people use to build their homes?"

Seatwork Center
The boys and girls completed a questionnaire about their moms for part one of their Mother's Day present!

Art Center
For part two of their Mother's Day present the boys and girls made a flower handprint!

Let's Find Out
This week was all about sharks!  We learned that sharks are not all the same: some have sharp teeth and some don't!  However, we learned that all sharks have gills to help them breathe and fins to help them swim.

Math Centers
We finished addition this week. On Monday and Tuesday we completed these centers all about making ten!
Math Facts: Make a 10 game on splashmath.com
At Your Seat: The kiddos completed addition sentences to find the pairs of numbers that make a 10.
Teacher Time: We worked with a partner to make a 10 using our tens frames!
Hands On: The kiddos placed basketballs on the "Equals Ten" sheet or "Does NOT Equal Ten" sheet depending on the equation written on the ball!

On Thursday we began subtraction!  Our centers on this day and Friday were all about exploring subtraction.
Math Facts: Subtraction (up to 5) with pictures game on splashmath.com
At Your Seat: The boys and girls counted the number of animals, crossed out those that were leaving and found/wrote the difference.
