March 27-31 Happenings!

March is over, which means we only have 3 months left of school!  How is the year going by so fast!?

Friday was our last spirit day for Read Across America and it was hat day!

Reading
Our story this week was Mayday! Mayday! A Coast Guard Rescue written by Chris Demarest.  In this book we went on a rescue mission with the coast guard as they saved a group of sailors.  We were able to look at a couple diagrams and learn about the tools a rescue swimmer has as well as a H-60 Jayhawk.

Fundations
We introduced two new trick words: me, be.  We also learned more about the digraphs sh, ch, th, wh, and ck.  We learned that when these letters are written together, they make one sound! We practiced spelling words that contain these digraphs.

Centers

Reading Groups
This week we started our reading groups by identifying the missing digraphs from words.  We then read stories about where we find water and the fun things we can do in the water!

Poetry Center
The kiddos drew an illustration for our poem entitled "Spring."  They then searched for and highlighted 7 trick words.

ABC Center
The students wrote, traced, colored, highlighted, and stamped their new trick words me and be.

Writing Center
We drew a picture and wrote a sentence to answer this question: "What kinds of emergency transportation have you seen?"

Handwriting Center
The kiddos used watercolors and finger paint to write our new trick words!

Fundations Center
The boys and girls sorted pictures by the digraph with which each begins.

Book Circle
The kiddos followed along to two stories that featured their new trick words.  They then searched for their trick words in each story.

Science Center
We completed an experiment this week to determine which objects would sink and which would float!

Math
This week we finished our chapter on solid shapes.  We were not able to do math centers since we have had so many visitors for career day!

Writing Workshop
We are writing stories about ourselves!  We continued to make sure we are adding detail to our pictures and that we are putting spaces in between our words!

Lets Find Out
This week we learned about the life cycle of a chicken! We watched a video of a chick hatching and compared how we are born much, much differently!
