March 6 - March 10 Happenings!

Happy Snow Day!

A lack of battery prevented me from positing what we did this past weekend, but here we go!

Our Read Across America spirit day this Friday was Crazy Hair Day!  The kiddos (and I) had a blast!

Reading
This week we read If You Could Go To Antarctica by Fay Robinson.  This non-fiction book taught us all about the Antarctic climate and animals.  We also learned that people don't live there!  The kiddos were amazed that they are about the same height as an emperor penguin!

Fundations
Two new trick words this week: as and has.  We now have nine Trick words!  We also learned the C and K rule.  The vowels in the word determine whether you use c or k.  If the vowel is a, o or u the word will start with a c (ex. cat).  If the vowel is e or i the word will start with a k (ex. kit). We practiced writing words that begin with /k/ and determining whether we should use c or k based on the vowel sound we heard.
C --> a o u
K --> e i

Centers

ABC Center
The kiddos wrote, traced, colored, highlighted, and stamped their new trick words as and has.

Fundations Center
The boys and girls worked to sound out and spell four letter words like flag, frog, spot, and crab.  They did a great job hearing sounds!

Book Circle
This week we followed along to two stories that used our new trick words.  The kiddos then searched for and circled these trick words.

Art Center
Toilet paper roll penguins!  They came out so cute!

Handwriting Center
To practice writing our trick words, the kiddos BINGO dobbed and decorated (with crayons) the letters in their two new trick words!

Writing Center
We wrote a sentence and drew a picture to answer the question: "If you could go to Antarctica, what would you like to do?"

Work With Miss Farr
This week we started reading groups!  We read stories this week about things that are white, things that can be hot and cold, and ways to have fun in the Winter!

Listening Center
The boys and girls listened to the story Ten Apples Up On Top by Dr. Seuss, but sung in a Jason Mraz style!  The kiddos then drew a picture of themselves with apples on their head to show their age!
Travis' work was also the first to be put up on our KA star Work wall!  The kiddos are working on doing their best work.  Each student will get a piece of work displayed on the bulletin boards in the back of our room!

Math
This week we began our chapter on solid, or 3D, shapes!  We worked to learn the names of the common solid shapes and identify them!  These were our centers for Thursday and Friday.
Math Facts - Peg and Cat Magical Shape Hunt @ pbskids.org
At Your Seat- The boys and girls sorted drawings of objects by which solid shape they hold (cube, cylinder, sphere, cone.
Teacher Time - We found and circled objects that hold a solid shape, such as a tissue box, a party hat, and a straw.
Hands On - The boys and girls played shape BINGO!
