February 27 - March 3 Happenings!

Welcome to March and Happy Read Across America Week!

At our school, we celebrate Read Across America all month long!  On Fridays we have themed days where we dress up in honor of a Dr. Seuss book.  This Friday we dressed up as our favorite character!

We also created our own Thing 1 and Thing 2 door decorations!  We teachers made Cats in the Hats!

Reading
In addition to all our Dr. Seuss related fun and learning, we also read Goldilocks and the Three Bears by Valerie Gorbachev.  We had two groups of students who were given the opportunity to act out the story.  They did such a fantastic job!  Hopefully we can act our some other familiar stories as the year continues.

Fundations
We added two new trick words to our list: is and his.  We continued to work on identifying these trick words and using them in sentences as well as the previous words we have introduced: a, and, are, to, the.

Centers

Fundations Center
The kiddos worked to identify CVC rhymes written on Thing 1 and Thing 2 cards!

Seatwork Center
After the students matched CVC rhymes, they worked to identify and color other rhyming words.

ABC Center
The boys and girls traced, wrote, colored, and stamped their two new trick words is and his.

Handwriting
They also worked to write these new words.  First they used markers and then they used crayons to rainbow write!

Book Circle
The kiddos listened and followed along to stories which used our two new trick words in sentences.  When the story ended, they searched for and circled the words.

Art Center
We made the Lorax this week!  It's always a fun art experience when we take paint out, especially when we get to use our hands!

Clipboard Cruising
The kiddos walked around the room and searched for hidden Dr. Seuss characters.  When they found them, they wrote their name next to their picture!

Writing Center
The kiddos drew and labeled their drawing to answer the question: What were two things Goldilocks did at the bear's house?

Math
This week we learned about equal parts.  We also started our lessons on probability by learning about the words unlikely and likely.

We had math centers on Monday and Tuesday to practice equal parts.  These were our centers:
Math Facts: Equal or not equal game at www.ixl.com
At Your Seat: The kiddos cut out and sorted shapes by equal and not equal parts.
Teacher Time: Using our math books, we identified shapes that were split in 2, 3, or 4 equal parts.
Hands On: Working as a team, the kiddos sorted shape cards by whether or not they showed equal parts.
