December 12-16 Happenings!

One more week until Winter break!

Reading
This week we read the nonfiction book Little Panda, by Joanna Ryder.  This story is about a panda named Hua Mei who was born at the San Diego Zoo.  We learned about the first year of Hua Mei's life and how she changed throughout that year.

Fundations
Letters q and z!  We learned that q has a best friend letter u.  These two letters are always together!  We have now learned all of our letters!

Centers

Fundations Center
The boys and girls played Rhyme Time again.  Rhyming is such an important skill and we are continuing to develop those skills!

Writing Center
The boys and girls drew and wrote what a baby panda likes to do!

Art Center
The kiddos decorated plates for their parents for the holidays!

Handwriting Center
The kiddos traced the letters q and z and then colored the corresponding keyword pictures "queen" and "zebra".

Pocket Chart
The boys and girls worked to sort pictures by the intiial sounds of /kw/ and /z/.  Then at ABC Center, the kiddos traced, wrote, and searched for the letters q and z.  They drew a picture of something that begins with each sound.

Listening Center
The kiddos listened to the story There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell.  They then worked together to feed the old lady what she ate in the correct order.

Clipboard Cruising
After the story, the boys and girls walked around and searched for five of the items the old lady ate!

Math
This week we continued working on numbers to 12.  On Monday and Tuesday our centers were based on the numbers 7, 8, and 9.  We counted mittens and using a clothespin clipped the correct number.  We also learned how 8 can be split into two equal parts.  On Thursday and Friday, we learned about tens frames, practiced identifying numbers using them, and we decorated Christmas trees with a given number of ornaments!
