October 3-7 Happenings!

Before we get started, check out the photos on our SHARING PAGE!
Thanks!!

Welcome to October!

I cannot believe we are already in the second month of Kindergarten!  It has certainly flown by with all the fun and learning that we have shared.

Morning Work
In addition to our Weekend News, the boys and girls practiced writing their names and on Friday they colored two NE Patriots coloring pages!

Reading
Our story this week was Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten written by Joseph Slate.  In this story the familiar character Miss Bindergarten takes her students on a field trip to places around the town.  They travel to the bakery, the fire station, the post office, the library, and end their field trip with a picnic at the park.  We practiced identify rhyming words while we read the story!

Fundations
We added the vowels i and u!  We learned that every word has at least one vowel and we learned that we can easily find vowels on our alphabet strips because they are written in red.  We practiced writing these two vowels, identifying the sounds they make, and stretching that sound out to better recognize and identify it.  The vowels can certainly be tricky, but the kiddos did a great job!

Centers

ABC Center
The boys and girls traced, wrote, and searched for the letters i and u.  They then drew a picture for each letter.  We worked very hard to think of words that began with the short /i/ and short /u/.

Drawing Center
The kiddos drew the next two pictures in their drawing books: a kite and an inchworm.

Pocket Chart
Working with me, the kiddos sorted pictures by the initial sounds: /i/, /f/, and /u/.

Listening Center
After listening to the story Pick a Pumpkin Mrs. Millie by Judy Cox, the boys and girls drew their favorite part of the story!

Handwriting Center
The boys and girls traced and colored the keyword pictures for the letters i and u.  These keyword pictures are "itch" and "up".

Social Studies Center
The boys and girls worked to identify different places in our community.  They cut out the words library, fire station, park, post office, and bakery and matched them to the pictures which they then colored.

Seatwork Center
The boys and girls wrote an i and a u next to the pictures that began with each sound.  They then colored the pictures.

Writing Center
The kiddos drew a picture of a place they would like to visit in North Andover.

Math
We finished our first chapter on positions and patterns this week!  We also took our first math test on which the kiddos did a fantastic job.  Next week we will begin chapter 2 about sorting.

PLAY TIME!
