March 28-April 1 Happenings!

Hi everyone and happy April!

It is so hard to believe that we only have three months of kindergarten left!  In 11 weeks we will be starting summer vacation and I am sure those weeks will fly by!  Thank you to each of you who has helped make our classroom the community it has become, the family we have created!

This week we read Chris L. Demarest's Mayday! Mayday! A Coast Guard Rescue.  This story taught the students how the Coast Guard responds to emergencies and rescue those in need.  In this book sailors were rescued from a yacht that capsized.  We learned how the Coast Guard works as a team, each member having a vital role in the completion of a rescue.  The children loved the detailed illustrations in this book and really enjoyed singing our weekly Reading Street song that accompanies the story (I had a blast singing this song as well!).

We focused on the letter Xx this week.  The students worked with their friends at their tables to come up with two words that end with the /x/ sound.  Once we started listing words, the boys and girls realized they could think of more and more!
The kiddos also drew pictures of words that end with /x/ for their morning work one morning.

Work Board

Math Center
The boys and girls practiced solving addition problems using legos and connecting cubes! Selecting a card printed from Playdough to Plato the kiddos built the first part of the problem, added the second, and arrived at the sum.  They then wrote either the number sentence or the sum on the card!

Work with Miss Farr
This week we kicked off Reading Groups as part of our Work Board centers.  The boys and girls are grouped with peers who share a current skill level in reading.  The kiddos read a story with me and then completed an activity, or they did the reverse, depending on their group.  We read stories this week about transportation and about caretakers.

Word Study
The boys and girls played memory with our Word Wall Words!

Writing Center
The kiddos drew pictures and wrote about people in our community who help others when we are in danger!

 Fun Friday
After tricking the kiddos on April Fools Day and telling them recess, choice time, and reading buddies were cancelled I figured I should take them outside for choice time and let them enjoy the weather!  They were great sports with the tricks I played on them :)
