March 22-25 Happenings!

Hi again everyone!

I hope everyone who celebrates Easter had a wonderful day and I hope everyone got to enjoy the beautiful weather we had this weekend!  I ate too much food and too much candy!

This week we had a four day week since we had a random snow day! I was not expecting snow to come with the great weather we had been having, but I am hoping that is the last of it!  We began our new unit for reading which is all about going places.  This week we read the book Max Takes the Train by Rosemary Wells.  In this story, Max takes different types of transportation to get to Zeke's Palace of Ice Cream.  He is traveling there to get his favorite ice cream treat: a double chocolate Whamburger with coconut curls and red sprinkles.  The children loved watching Max travel on the Air-O-Zoom, the subway and the train.  They also loved seeing Max's sister Ruby ride her bicycle built for two, with the sidecar, all the way to Zeke's to get Max and their Uncle Bunny!

We focused on the letters Jj and Ww this week.  We made lists of words that begin with each letter and we drew pictures of objects that begin with each letter.

Work Board

 Listening Center
The boys and girls listened to another story by Lucille Colandro called There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick. The kiddos loved the silliness of this book!

Art Center
They then made chicks and/or bunnies out of paper cups!  They worked very hard tracing the pieces for this project and gluing them on the cups!

Word Study Center
The boys and girls worked on reading CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words.  They touched a dot under each letter saying the sound.  They then ran their finger along an arrow below the letters/dots and blended the sound together.  After they blended the sounds to read the words, they pinched off a clothespin to reveal a picture of the word!  Thank you Miss Kindergarten Love for this great learning experience!

Social Studies Center
The boys and girls worked together to sort pictures of different types of transportation (source).  They sorted the types of transportation by where they travel - land, air, or sea.  They then worked independently to color, cut, and paste 6 of the objects into those three groups.

Writing Center
The kiddos chose one way that Max traveled to Zeke's and wrote a sentence about it!

 Play Centers
After we finished our work this week we were able to play games, create with pattern blocks, and build with Legos and Lincoln Logs.
