March 7-11 Happenings!

Hello again!

We certainly had a fun filled week with our visit from the Stone Zoo on Monday and the Variety Show on Thursday!  I want to thank the boys and girls for being such fabulous audience members during the Variety Show.  This is one of my favorite events of the year and I know the kiddos enjoyed it as well!

Monday's visit from the Stone Zoo was very exciting!  We were visited not only by a Zoo Educator, but also by three animal friends: a Madagascar hissing cockroach, a corn snake, and a chinchilla!  I am sure you can take an educated guess that the favorite visitor was the chinchilla!  The students sure got a laugh when I, fearfully, touched the snake and then proceeded to run out of the room!  Once our animal friends left, we sat down and wrote about which animal was our favorite!
This week we read Fay Robinson's If You Could Go To Antarctica.  We learned where Antarctica is on the Earth, how cold it is, and about all the animals that live there!  We also learned that the children are about the same height as emperor penguins!

For phonics, we focused on the letter Ee.  We practiced identifying the medial vowel sound in words and we shared some words that begin with the short /e/ sound.

Work Board

Book Browsing
The boys and girls worked with a partner to read two short stories.  They searched for two new Word Wall Words in the stories: here and go.
Seatwork
We practiced sorting pictures by the beginning sound.  The beginning letter sounds we sorted were /f/ and /v/, /g/ and /b/, and /k/ and /l/.

 Word Study (Number 1)
We had two Word Study centers this week.  During the first center, the kiddos practiced reading and writing Word Wall Words.  They tossed a bath toy into a basket that was labeled with a Word Wall Word.  Once the word was read, each student went back to the table, wrote the word and then stamped the word.  The children had a blast at this center!

 Word Study (Number 2)
For the second Word Study center, the boys and girls practiced spelling four-letter words using picture cards and magnetic letters!

Writing Center
The boys and girls wrote a sentence and drew a picture to share where they would like to travel if they could travel anywhere in the world!

Special Guest
On Friday one of our parents brought in some shells and some shark teeth from their family's recent trip to Florida.  The children had a chance to guess how many shark teeth were in a jar and the winner was able to take a tooth home! There were over 700 teeth in the jar!
