September 12-16 Happenings!

We survived the first full week!

This week we began so many things!  Our reading series, Fundations, and our math series.  The kiddos are continuing to adjust well to our daily schedule.

Morning Work
On Monday the kiddos drew a picture to show what they did over the weekend.  On Tuesday-Friday they rotated centers practicing fine motor skills such as squeezing a hole puncher, peeling and sticking stickers, completing lacing cards and writing their names with paint and Q-tips.

Reading
Our story this week was called The Little School Bus.  This story is about animals who get picked up by the bus to go to school!  We learned ordinal words like first, second, and third.  We also practiced rhyming as each character had a special rhyme such as the quick, quick chick and the hairy bear.

Fundations
We began Fundations by learning about our writing grid, how to get ready to write, and we introduced the letter t.  We learned that it says /t/ and the picture of a top helps us to remember!  We also came up with words that begin with /t/.

Centers

Fundations Centers
The boys and girls had two Fundation based centers this week.  The first center helped to familiarize the children with the names of the lines in our writing grid (sky line, plane line, grass line, worm line.)  The children colored each line with a specific color.

The second center introduced the kiddos to how writers get ready to write.  Writers are ready when they sit nice and tall with their backs all the way to the back of their seat.  They then slant their paper depending on which hand they write with.  Next they pick up their pencil with a pinch grasp.  The kiddos colored the picture on the side of the paper that matches the hand they write with.

Social Studies Center
The boys and girls colored, cut, and glued a picture to show how they get to school!  They then wrote the word.

Handwriting Center
The kiddos traced three different kinds of lines: straight, zig-zag, and curved.

ABC Center
Since we learned about the letter t this week we traced, wrote, and search for it!

Writing Center
The boys and girls chose an animal from The Little School Bus, drew a picture of it, and then labeled the animal.

Math
We began our math series with an introduction to some of the topics we will cover this year: colors, shapes and describing words (big, small, more, most).

Other Fun Learning Experiences
We played lots of games, built lots of towers and even had our first RAISE rally this week!
