January 25-29 Happenings!

It is so crazy that we have completed the last week of January and we have passed the halfway mark of Kindergarten!

This week we read the story Hide Clyde written by Russell Benfanti.  The story taught us that chameleons change color to protect themselves from danger.  It also taught us that we can learn to do things even when we can't do them at first!  We spent time reviewing and continuing to practice identifying words that begin with and have the short o sound in the middle.

Work With Miss Farr Center
This week the students worked with me and we focused on properties of sentences.  We focused on identifying how sentences begin with an uppercase letter, have spaces between the words, and end with some sort of punctuation (period or exclamation point).  We also discussed how sentences need to make sense with what the picture shows.  The kiddos then moved to Seat Work Center where they practiced writing sentences using our Word Wall Words.

Writing Center
The children wrote and drew a picture to show where they would hide if they were a chameleon.  We had a variety of answers such as hiding on our televisions, on a basketball, or in our beds.  We are continuing to work on adding spaces in our sentences!

Word Study Center
The boys and girls practiced identifying medial vowel sounds in words using "snowballs"!  They identified the picture, determined the vowel sound, and then placed the picture on the right circle.  We are really getting the hang of these vowel sounds!

Art Center
The children were able to trace, cut out and decorate their own chameleon!  They colored and painted it to look like something in their house where it could camouflage itself!

Play Centers
We had a lot of fun this week building with blocks, creating with straws/connectors, making courses with our marble run, and playing games!

Fun On Friday!
We played a game after morning meeting and then after snack the children, who felt comfortable, were given the opportunity to read a book to the class!  We had a captive audience and each child was so proud of his/her peers!
